How do you help someone who does have pain but is addicted to pills?

She NEEDS some. she had surgery and a ripped rotator cuff (sp?) in her shoulder. But she has been taking way to many for along time to the point where she cant function in everyday life.

So how do I help someone when I cant tell them to stop because they will be in pain?

Is a doctor monitoring her use of the pills? Most pain relief medication is not meant to be taken long term, but unfortunately a lot of them are addictive. If she lives in the right state for it she may want to ask about medical marijuana which lots of people use for pain and it is not physically addictive like those meds. If not she may want to see an acupuncturist or something to see if that helps her. Unfortunately all you can do is express your concerns in a non-judgemental way and ask if she needs any help with her problem.
