What should I expect after a steroid injection in my shoulder?
I had a partial dislocation of my shoulder nearly 2 years ago and an operation to repair it 18 months ago - anterior stabilisation and sub-acromial decompression. My recovery went well with lots of physiotherapy and exercise and I've considered myself pretty "normal" for the last 6 months. 2 weeks ago I started getting extreme pain in my shoulder with no obvious trigger - no trauma or exercise related strain. I had a arthrogram (MRI with contrast media) which showed that my surgery was all intact but my rotator cuff was inflammed. My consultant has given me a steroid injection to reduce the inflammation. It's now 3 days since the injection and I'm worried about my symptoms. My consultant told me to expect some pain as a result of the injection and that this should calm down in 4 or 5 days. I'm clearly not at that point yet, so not too worried about the pain I'm having, but my shoulder is starting to crack, creak, pop and grind when I move it. It feels really odd, a little unstable and is very unpleasant. Is this normal? Is it to do with the steroid injection or the rotator cuff inflammation? Will it subside? Anything I can do to help it?
